The 2025 Bristol BookFest Weekend is set to ignite minds and spark conversation! Join us April 4-5 for a thought-provoking lineup featuring a keynote conversation with author, publisher and bookseller Kelly Link, a deep dive into Ray Bradbury’s world with Jason Aukerman and interactive legal role-play focused on “Fahrenheit 451” with Rod Smolla. We’ll introduce the Conversation Parlor to foster community discussion and feature roboticists from Brown University with a Boston Dynamics robot called Spot, an AI “mechanical hound.” Friday, April 4: Keynote Presentation A Conversation with Kelly Link 5:00 p.m. at Colt Andrews School Auditorium The BookFest Keynote at Colt Andrews School Auditorium will be a conversation with Kelly Link, facilitated by Bristol BookFest Committee member Jillian Hanon DeLong. A reception will be hosted at Rogers Free Library immediately following the keynote. Both events are free of charge, but require registration. Seats are limited. Register Here Keynote Speaker: Kelly Link Hailed as "the most darkly playful voice in American fiction," indie publisher, short story writer and MacArthur grant recipient Kelly Link creates brilliantly detailed, emotionally haunting "pocket universes" laced with humor and magic. Link enchants audiences with her fantastical imagination and infectious zest for both writing and publishing. Link’s short stories have been published in The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction, A Public Space, Tin House, One Story, Conjunctions, The Best American Short Stories and Prize Stories: The O. Henry Awards. Link is the co-founder of Small Beer Press and co-edits the occasional zine Lady Churchill’s Rosebud Wristlet. Saturday, April 5: Speaker Series & Panel with Jason Aukerman, Kelly Link and Rod Smolla 9:00 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. at Linden Place Ballroom and Bristol Art Museum The Saturday Program at Linden Place Ballroom and Bristol Art Museum has limited space, and registration is required. Register Here Dr. Jason Aukerman Director of Ray Bradbury Center “Ray Bradbury: A Life Between the Pages, the Stars and the Flames of Censorship” Dr. Aukerman is the director of the Ray Bradbury Center at Indiana University Indianapolis. He oversees the curation and preservation of one of the largest single-author archives in the United States, including more than 150,000 pages of Ray Bradbury’s published and unpublished works. The Ray Bradbury Center is a national resource for literacy advocacy and public engagement. Rod Smolla President of Vermont Law and Graduate School “You Be the Judge: Legal Role-Play with Audience Participation” Rod Smolla is president of Vermont Law and Graduate School. A noted constitutional law scholar and litigator, he has presented arguments in state and federal courts, including the U.S. Supreme Court. His article, “The Life of the Mind and a Life of Meaning: Reflections on Fahrenheit 451,” was published in The Michigan Law Review in 2009. Smolla will lead the audience in an inter-active role- playing exercise exploring the anatomy of censorship. Audience members will play the roles of Justices of the United States Supreme Court, in a “moot court” argument involving a fictional case on censorship. Smolla will first play the role of lawyer arguing on behalf of one side of the dispute, and then play the role of lawyer for the opposing side. Audience members, playing the role of the Justices, will be invited to pepper each of the two lawyer characters with questions, and then debate the proper outcome of the case. Benned Hedegaard and Ivy He Brown University Doctoral Students Benned Hedegaard and Ivy He, doctoral students at Brown University, are roboticists. They will share the realities of AI capabilities and demonstrate the mobility of Spot, a Boston Dynamics’ robot. Spot will stick around for photo opportunities. Conversation Parlor A new addition to Bristol BookFest Weekend is the Conversation Parlor, a dedicated time for small-group discussion.
